The Bridge Society

The Bridge Society was created in 1991 by the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley to encourage and recognize outstanding leadership giving among individuals.

The many bridges throughout our Valley have been and continue to be vital connections.  During the 1800’s, four bridges were erected across the Ohio River.  These spans opened east-west routes for travel and trade.  They were the connecting links between the various towns and brought people together from both sides of the river.  A total community was formed which prospered and enjoyed a better way of life.

This environment of bridges suggests the bridge as a metaphor of the United Way’s role in our community today.  Where stone and steel end, ingenuity and generosity begin.

The United Way brings people together from all walks of life that care about their fellow citizens and provides a bridge that connects agencies’ services to people’s needs in a cost efficient and effective manner.  The Bridge Society leads the way in strengthening the quality of life of our community.

Membership in the Bridge Society is limited to individuals who contribute $1,000 or more annually to the United Way.  If a contributor and his or her spouse both contribute to the United Way, the combined contribution of $1,000 or more qualifies them for membership.

Each bridge is anchored by foundation cornerstones, supported by piers and stabilized by its trusses.  The suspension bridge, however, stands apart as a truly unique engineering masterpiece.  The Bridge Society also stands apart as a unique tribute to the community.
